Draw the boundary
Mark the equipment, tooling and handling included in the proposed cell. Identify responsibility for upstream and downstream devices.
List the signals
Discuss ready states, permissives, part identity, recipe selection and result handoff. Define what the surrounding line needs to know before it moves a part.
Review exceptions
Walk through an interrupted cycle, rejected part and recovery after a stop. Agree which conditions need operator action and which require maintenance review.
Discuss your production requirementsMake the review easy to maintain
Use an interface register with a named owner for each connection and decision. Record the expected behavior, the receiving system and how the interface will be checked. Keep unresolved items visible as the mechanical layout and control sequence develop.
Bring production and maintenance into the discussion
A technically complete signal list can still leave operational questions unanswered. Ask how an operator identifies an interrupted part, who authorizes recovery and how maintenance verifies a replacement device. These conversations help turn an equipment boundary into a workable production handoff.
